Until the IIM Act, 2017, every IIM ran as an autonomous body registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. As societies they could not award degrees — they gave a Post Graduate Diploma (PGDM), not an MBA — yet they were, and remain, the gold standard.
AICTE's remit centres on regular, campus-based technical and PGDM institutions. Online and distance management programmes sit outside that rigid structure — free to set their own curricula, intake and credentials.
Premier online and distance institutes such as IICT (Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade) and IIPM (Indian Institute of Pharmaceutical Marketing) have delivered management education autonomously for more than three decades — the IIM model, built for flexible, working-professional formats.
Today's most talked-about schools — Masters' Union, Mesa School of Business and others — deliberately run as autonomous institutes, not AICTE colleges. A rigid template suits fixed degrees; management education works best with the freedom to teach from live industry practice.
The honest takeaway: if you specifically need a UGC degree, verify UGC recognition. If you are choosing a management programme for skills, network and outcomes, an autonomous institute can be just as valuable — often more current. AICTE approval is simply not the deciding factor for an MBA.
